Disease and Pest forecasting an IPM tool
Sunil Kaityaan

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a system for accomplishing a specific goal of minimizing the impact of pests by adopting a variety of procedures and attempting to decrease the overall pesticide input in the environment. As with any system, IPM is influenced by the development and advent of new technologies, disease or pest forecasting system is one of them.

Plant disease or pest forecasting can prevent the injudicious use of pesticides and its aftermaths, which is well known and documented. Moreover, disease or pest forecasting would add to the quality of the agricultural produce and returns to the farmers. Disease forecasting allows the prediction of probable outbreaks of disease and therefore, instead of following guesstimate, we can decide whether, when, and where a particular management practice should be used. It empowers the farmers/growers by assisting them in making real time decision related to pest and disease on their agricultural crops like Grape, apple, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, cotton, citrus, wheat, rice, oilseeds et cetera.

We cant undo the damage already caused by the non judicious use of pesticides, but we can at least provide the safe, clean and healthy environment to our children by adopting the safer and wiser means of agricultural practices.
